Hi, I’m Cheerted Keo, also known as RYYSA, meaning “roots”, ឫស in Khmer. What began as a personal art project during my freelance illustration work in the Netherlands soon became a profound journey—a way for me to reconnect with my Cambodian heritage and bridge the gap between two very different worlds.

Growing up in the Netherlands, art was my anchor. It opened doors, provided opportunities, and, most importantly, became a sanctuary. It was the language through which I could communicate, reflect, and express what words couldn’t capture.

Through this medium, I began delving into my parents’ stories and, in turn, uncovering my own identity. Raised in the duality of an European culture outside and Asian traditions at home, I’ve long been navigating this intersection of worlds. Ryysa became the vessel through which I could explore and express the richness of this blended experience.

Now living in Cambodia, I am both witness and participant in the country’s rapid transformation. From the scars of war to the vibrancy of modern development, Cambodia stands at crossroads, and I believe this moment calls for a new visual language. One that honors the past while embracing the present.

I see my role as an artist here as helping to shape that narrative—to layer new perspectives onto Cambodia’s evolving identity without erasing what came before.

My work is not just a form of self-expression, but a means to tell the stories that often go unheard. I strive to create art that fosters connection, unity, and dialogue in a world that is increasingly divided. Through my visual storytelling, I hope to bridge cultural gaps, spark conversation, and remind us all of the shared human experience.
