Cambodia, 2022 marks the year of the Tiger, and what better way to start the year with a big festival, sponsored by Tiger beer: Murals for Cambodia. This is a 3 days event filled with local and international artists, live music performances provided by names such as Klap Ya Handz and Baramey Records.

THE ARTISTS

Behind the organization are Fonki and his FT team. The designer responsible for the amazing looking graphics is Jean Baptiste Carraro aka BBK Studios.

Selective artist were invited to paint murals for this event, and I’m honoured to be part of it. We had artists coming from all over the world, Thailand, Switzerland, France, Japan, Nepal and the Netherlands.

MY ARTWORK

The artwork for this mural comes from an illustration I’d done already some time ago, called “Noodle Rain”, or in khmer: ភ្លៀងមី. The chopsticks are grabbing rain, that transforms into noodles. It’s a light hearted and fun piece, that perfectly resonates with the festival’s vibe.

I often times draw inspiration from the surrealism movement for most of my work. I like to play with the impossible, and look for graphical elements to do this with.

One method is to abstract these graphical elements to their simplest shapes, that gives you space to put a different spin on it. As for here, the rain is perceived as rain, because of it’s context: the many grouped lines, the drops on the floor, and so on. But they are simply just depicted as abstract lines, and abstract shapes or forms have no meaning within itself. Because of this we can play around with it to give it a different meaning.
